Employee benefits are broken.

The United States healthcare system has spiraled out of control. The cost of healthcare has outpaced wages for decades now.

Employees used to be able to get high-quality care at an affordable price, with a reasonable copay and deductible. Now every year it gets harder and harder for ordinary, hard-working Americans to afford basic healthcare.

It also gets harder for employers to provide good healthcare to their employees.

Most small and medium-sized business leaders are good-hearted people who want the best for their employees. They want to provide health insurance. They want to provide employee benefits. But with the cost of benefits accounting for as much as 40% of total employee compensation, it’s no longer an easy decision.

Employers are hurting. Employees too.

Employers sit down at the table with their broker. They gasp at the numbers on the papers the broker pushes toward them. “Our rates are going up again? And by how much?”

The broker replies, “Sorry. Rates are going up for everyone. I’ve shopped around, and this is the best we can do.”

So the business owner—who’s already pinched—is forced to choose. To choose between paying more just to keep the same quality of care, or slashing benefits in order to avoid a ridiculous premium increase.
